Freelance Animation offers diplomas in 2D and 3D animation. They excel in animation training, with an emphasis on true character animation. Regardless of medium, students create works that not only move – but tell stories, exist in worlds, carry histories, inspire, influence audiences and entertain. As an animator, you breathe life into your characters – the heroes and villains of your stories. You are the artist, creating worlds that have never before existed. When audiences view your animation and connect with your character that is when you know it is alive and exists in its own right. These are the animations of excellence, which let your audience experience an emotional connection with the world you have created.
Throughout the years, animation technology has continued to develop and this is reflected in the way that Freelance’s curriculum has progressed. The emphasis though, continues to retain a strong focus on ‘character animation’, in essence true performance animation. Once learnt the true principles of animation are transferable to any software, medium or technology that students will encounter in the industry. By studying a comprehensive curriculum the students learn in depth the foundations of the most important animation principles; weight, timing, balance, flow and drag, anticipation, exaggeration, expressions, fundamental drawing and human anatomy knowledge. These help lay a solid foundation to produce realistic characters and performance that invokes empathy in the viewer. This is true character animation.
Freelance Animation is the only institute in New Zealand which specialises in teaching the art of character animation.
