In 2011 the third year students studying for the Diploma in Digital Media were given the opportunity to work on an industry brief with Flux Animation Studio on their new pre-school TV series, Tiki Tour.
All of the students had an opportunity to produce short animations for the show, and were given creative license to come up with their ideas. The students chose which ever medium they wished to work in – this included traditional hand-drawn animation, cut-out style in Toon Boom, After Effects and 3D. It was a great opportunity for the students to use a variety of different animation techniques to achieve a professional result.
Flux is an award winning animation studio based in Auckland. Following the successful launch of the first season of Tiki Tour which was developed by the studio, they have been given the go ahead for the second season. Tiki Tour and Flux were also recently featured in the Toon Boom News winter edition with a great write up about the studio and TV show – plus a mention of our Freelance students!
Creating animation for Tiki Tour was an excellent opportunity for Third Year students to gain valuable experience working with a studio on an active project. Throughout, the students were guided by the studio, and given a huge amount of excellent and constructive feedback. Flux also gave permission for the students to use the animation that they had done in their personal show reels; which also contributed to the student’s animation assessment at the end of the year, and some of the animation they produced was chosen to feature in the show.
Freelance Animation students have always benefited from opportunities to work with industry, and will continue to do so! Thanks to the cooperation from leading studios in New Zealand, and the coordination of the tutors and staff at Freelance, experiences are created that will help to prepare graduates to become skilled animators and enter the workforce.
