Medical and Travel Insurance
International students must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while in New Zealand. This is also an enrolment requirement of Freelance Animation.
For in depth information regarding medical and travel insurance please download our International Student Guide.
Where can I get medical and travel insurance?
Freelance’s preferred medical and travel insurance company is Studentsafe-International, but you are able to purchase with a different company as long as they meet the Code of Practice requirements.
How much will it cost?
Studentsafe-International premium will cost NZD$ 565* for one year. The costs for other premiums from different companies vary. *This price is prior to the GST increase that comes into effect on Oct 1st 2010.
I want to go with Studentsafe-International, what do I do?
Firstly you will need to make sure that you thoroughly read and understand all the information regarding policy wording. It is the students’ responsibility to have a comprehensive understanding of what the policy includes and excludes. Once you’re happy with the conditions, you need to pay the fee to Freelance Animation who will then purchase the plan on behalf of you. You will then be emailed a copy of your policy certificate.
I want to go with one of the Code’s approved companies instead, what do I do?
You will need to organise the payment of this independantly and again, make sure you understand the policy and what it includes and excludes. Once you have paid for the policy, Freelance requires either a verified copy of your policy certificate or to sight the original one. If it is found to be with a company that is not approved by the Code, you will be required to purchase Studentsafe-International.
Eligibility for health services
As an international student, you’re not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your time here, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly-funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at http://www.moh.govt.nz.
Accident insurance
The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs.
